Social connections and activities programs

Our Social Connections and activities programs are designed to cater to the needs of our Moreland Community aged 65 years and over.

We offer a great range of community, center-based, and online activities delivered to you in a COVIDSafe environment.

Programs currently running

Inner peace and balance

A seated Tai Chi using cold rock meditation, calm art, and other sensory stimulation techniques to calm the mind, and reduce anxiety. This is an indoor activity. Enjoy a nutritious snack pack at the end of the session.

When: 10am to 1pm on Mondays each week

Where: Newlands Senior Centre at 49-53 Murray Road, Coburg

Cafe connections

A community-based program where clients can enjoy a nutritious meal and connect with others.

When: 11:30am to 1:30pm, Tuesdays and Wednesdays each week

Where: Café Stradina at 22 Eileen Street, Hadfield

Wander walks

Come along for a wander around our local area to explore different sights and areas of interest. Walks are slow-paced and will take place in the surrounding streets, parks, and trails. Enjoy a nutritious morning tea at the end of the walk.

When: 10am to 12:30pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays each week

Nature, nurture and natter

Social Connections and Activities Programs and Open Space will offer a 9-week ‘walk and talk’ program located at various sites across Moreland. This project will provide an opportunity to target older CHSP funded clients who have been particularly isolated and are in need of meaningful social connections.

When: 10:30am to 12:30pm on Tuesdays each week

Where: various parks within Moreland City Council

Cost: $6.20 per session (includes a snack)

Out and about program

This is an all-day program. We will visit places of interest across Melbourne, enjoy a meal and socialise with friends.

When: all-day program on Tuesdays and Fridays each week

Where: various selected locations

Cost: $6.20 per session - BYO or buy lunch

Evergreen gardening group

A weekly social gardening group open to all clients and targeted at those who are less socially connected, where participants can meet to enjoy light gardening activities along with a nutritious light meal.

When: 10am to 1pm on Wednesdays each week

Where: Newlands Senior Centre at 49-53 Murray Road, Coburg

Cost: $6.20

Men’s engagement group

Come and join our vibrant Men’s engagement group. Enjoy good company while you have a nutritious lunch on our new outdoor deck.

When: 10am to 1pm on Thursdays each week

Where: Newlands Senior Centre at 49-53 Murray Road, Coburg

Cost: $6.20

Fitness and Friendships

Join us for an interactive wellbeing session where you can connect with others while enjoying a gentle seated exercise program to strengthen your muscles, improve your coordination and boost your vitality.

This program is suitable for all fitness levels and is led by a fitness instructor from YMCA Coburg. Bring your own resistance band, dumbbells (500g to 1kg), a soft medium size ball, and your best smile. Loan equipment available on request.

When: 2pm to 3pm on Fridays each week

Where: these sessions are held Online using Zoom

Cost: $6.20 per person

How to join our programs

People wishing to join our Social Connections and activities program are required to meet the Commonwealth Home Support Program criteria.

You can join our programs by first:

  1. Contacting My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 and checking your eligibility for a face-to-face or phone assessment
  2. Once you establish your eligibility you can ask for a referral to Moreland Social Support groups (Social Connections and activities groups)
  3. Once we receive the referral we will contact you to finalise your registration

Seniors groups

In Moreland, there are over 70 senior citizens groups. Our groups for seniors are for older people from all different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. The groups meet at different venues around Moreland and provide an opportunity for older people in the community to get together for activities and socialising.
