Writing & Concepts with Sofi Basseghi

In this presentation, artist and researcher Dr Sofi Basseghi will discuss her creative practice. This program is presented in partnership with Writing & Concepts.

While completing her practice-led PhD research, Sofi explored the social impacts of the 1979 Iranian Revolution. She payed particular attention to the impacts on women born during the Iran/Iraq war (1980-88). Through her video installations, which combine documentary and narrative film, Sofi presents a window into the lives of Iranian women. Some women have migrated to Australia, and some still live in Iran. In Sofi’s collaborative work, their lived experiences morph into imagined narratives informed by Persian poetry and folklore.

Sofi is also a fellow at the State Library of Victoria, where she is researching the Persian roots of the word ‘paradise’ in her project 'The Road to Pairidaeza'. Her fellowship involves studying the 16th century manuscript copy of Nizami Ganjavi’s Khamsa (Quintet), which is in the State Library of Victoria collection.

Dr Sofi Basseghi’s presentation resonates with our current exhibitions: Yeki Bood, Yeki Nabood, Means Without End and The Sky After Rain.
