The Counihan Gallery celebrates the Greek Bicentenary

Thursday 25 March 2021 marks two-hundred years of Modern Greece.
Moreland is proud of its Greek community and is pleased to hold various works by Greek artists in the Moreland Art Collection. As part of the Counihan Gallery’s celebration of the Greek Bicentenary, we are displaying these works across the municipality. Works by George Matoulas, Anastasia Bekos and Mark Babatsikos can be found in the Brunswick Library and Coburg Library from Wednesday 10 March.
#StreetofSurprises
Street of Surprises, Photographs from Sydney Road, Brunswick is a photo-series by John Werrett documenting the faces Werrett encountered on Sydney Road in 1993. Naturally, many of the portrait subjects were Greek business owners or residents. To celebrate Moreland’s rich Greek history and contribution to the municipality, we are putting these historic faces back on Sydney Road where the portraits were originally taken. In March, photographic reproductions from the series can be found along Sydney Road in an activation of Werrett’s Street of Suprises.
You can find out more about these faces via the Counihan Gallery’s social media pages using the #StreetofSurprises hashtag or by visiting the Brunswick Town Hall from Wednesday 10 March.
As part of #StreetofSurprises, Georgia Kartas (AKA St Jorge) will be performing Pandemos and other poems on Thursday 11 March, 7pm.
