International Climate Change Action
Moreland is proud to be a member of the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI); an international association of local and metropolitan governments dedicated to sustainable development.
ICLEI provides technical consulting, training, and information services to build capacity, share knowledge, and support local government in the implementation of sustainable development at the local level.
In December 2015 Moreland joined the Compact of Mayors; the world’s largest co-operative effort among cities and local governments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, track progress and prepare for the impacts of climate change. The Compact is one of ICLEI’s major campaigns.
Moreland joined in time to add its name to a distinguished list of cities around the world committed to taking action on climate change prior to the Paris International Climate Negotiations. Other Australian Council’s who have also joined the Compact include Mornington Peninsula Shire, City of Port Phillip, City of Joondalup, Byron Shire Council (in addition to Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide).
The Compact of Mayors is an example of how ICLEI can work with Moreland to raise Council’s profile and demonstrate on a global level that cities are true climate leaders and that local action can have significant global impact.
The Compact establishes a common platform to capture the impact of cities’ collective actions through standardised measurement of emissions and climate risk, and consistent, public reporting of their efforts.
