Changes to parking in your area-abandoned

At the December 2020 meeting, Council resolved to abandon planned future parking restrictions arising from the Moreland Integrated Transport Strategy (MITS) 2019 in all Activity Centres (Coburg, Brunswick and Glenroy) and all Neighbourhood Centres, in favour of making changes based on community support and/or high levels of parking demand on a street-by-street basis.

Council:

  • reaffirmed the objective of mode shift to more sustainable transport options.
  • recognised that using sustainable alternatives to driving is difficult for many in Moreland, partly due to lack of investment in the public transport system by the state government, particularly in the North of Moreland.
  • noted that mode shift requires strong investment in public transport, cycling, walking and other sustainable transport infrastructure, as well as incentives and encouragements to take up sustainable transport.

MITS 2019 is being amended to reflect these changes and a report will be received by Council in April 2021.

What does this mean for MITS parking changes that have already happened?

At the end of 2019, parking changes were made in the areas near the shopping strips of:

(Changes were made around Gaffney Street, Pascoe Vale (map (PDF 126Kb)). These changes were discontinued and removed in February 2020.)

At the December 2020 meeting, Council decided to survey these 2 areas to find out if the community support the parking restrictions put in place in December 2019.

  • If the community does not support the parking restrictions, the Council decided the restrictions that were put in place in December 2019 will be removed.
  • If the community does support the parking restrictions, they will remain in place.

We will contact residents and businesses in these areas in early 2021 to conduct the survey.

If you have any questions, please email betterparking@moreland.vic.gov.au or call 9240 1111.

If you have a parking permit that allows you to park in these areas, the permit is still valid. The parking restrictions will continue to be enforced while we carry out the survey.

If the parking restrictions are removed as a result of the community survey and you no longer require your permit, you will be able to obtain a refund.
