Coburg completed projects

You can find information about almost all of our recently completed projects on Conversations Moreland. The information on this page is only from Coburg projects that started before we were using Conversations Moreland, or projects that didn't require community input to be completed.

2020 to 2021 projects

  • In 2020 we completed road reconstruction works on Foch Avenue, Coburg between Strathearn Avenue and Haig Avenue. We undertook consultation with the residents in May 2019 and the design was completed in June 2019. The budget for this project was $290,290 and construction was completed between January and March 2020.

    The works included:

    • The construction of new underground drainage system and pits.
    • Reconstructing the existing bluestone kerb and channel.
    • Reconstructing the existing road pavement.
    • Laying a new asphalt road surface.
    • The reconstruction of vehicle crossings between the new kerb and footpath edge.
    • The reinstatement of nature strips.
  • In 2020 we completed road reconstruction works on Glenora Avenue, Coburg between Rennie Street and Carlisle Street. We undertook consultation with the residents in March 2019 and the design was completed in May 2019. The budget for this project was $865,730 and construction was completed between August 2019 and January 2020.

    The works included:

    • The construction of new underground drainage system and pits.
    • Reconstructing the existing bluestone kerb and channel.
    • Reconstructing the existing road pavement.
    • Laying a new asphalt road surface.
    • The reconstruction of vehicle crossings between new kerb and footpath edge.
    • The reinstatement of nature strips.
  • In 2020 we upgraded the playground at Hosken Reserve. This included new play equipment and garden beds, and the use of recycled materials. We also added a new path and new exotic and native plants to provide summer shade and winter sun to the space.

  • In 2020 we upgraded the play space at Mailer Reserve. This was part of the Moreland Play Strategy 2016-20. This included improvements to the playground and a fresh lawn area beside the play space. For the park details go to our Mailer Reserve page.

  • In 2020 we finished construction on the pedestrian/cycle bridge across Edgar’s Creek near Ronald Street, Coburg North. Landscaping works are to be undertaken in Autumn 2021 and we will complete them by the end of May 2021.

    A flood event damaged the footbridge beyond repair in late 2016. We removed all parts of the damaged bridge after this happened. We then had a consultant investigate options for a replacement bridge and/or formalised path on the west side of Merri Creek linking into the Kodak Bridge. We also used Melbourne Water's requirements for any new or replacement bridge. This influenced the bridge design.

    The key stages of this project included:

    • A public meeting in December 2018.
    • Presentation of the feasibility study to Council in April 2018.
    • The design phase, third party approvals, public tender process and awarding of contract from May 2018 to December 2019.
    • An information evening in November 2018.
    • The endorsement of the Final Design and awarding of Construction Contract in December 2019.
    • Issuing a planning permit in March 2020.
    • Construction works from April to December 2020.

    Ronald Street footbridge construction works documents:

  • In 2020 we refurbished and moved an Exeloo public toilet in the Russell Street car park. This was part of the Moreland Public Toilet Strategy. This included refurbishing an Exeloo toilet and moving it to the Russell Street car park. We also moved the disability parking spaces in the Russell Street car park. We've decorated the new toilet with a mural by artist Stephanie Hughes and students from Coburg Primary School. For more details see the documents below.

  • In 2020 we completed road reconstruction on The Avenue, Coburg from Nicholson Street down to the Eastern end. We undertook consultation with the residents in May 2019 and the design was completed in July 2019. The budget for this project was $585,000 and construction was completed between January and May 2020.

    The works included:

    • The construction of new underground drainage system and pits.
    • Reconstructing the existing bluestone kerb and channel.
    • Reconstructing the existing road pavement.
    • Laying a new asphalt road surface.
    • The reconstruction of vehicle crossings between new kerb and footpath edge.

2019 to 2020 projects

  • In 2019 we upgraded the play space at Anderson Reserve. This was part of the Moreland Play Strategy 2016-20. Our Open Space Team finished constructing the new Anderson Reserve play space in December 2019. Planting in the new garden beds was delayed until after summer to allow the plants to grow in more mild conditions. For the park details go to our Anderson Reserve page.

  • In 2019 we completed landscaping works at the Coburg City Oval. We completed stage 1 of this work in 2015 and opened up the oval for greater community access. Stage 2 and 3 included the redesign of public areas around the oval for greater access. We also increased amenity and recreation opportunities. For more details see the documents below.

  • In 2019 we completed road reconstruction works on Glenora Avenue, Coburg between Harding Street and Carlisle Street. The budget for this project was $670,000 and construction was completed between November 2018 and February 2019.

    The works included:

  • In 2019 we completed road reconstruction works on Lorensen Avenue, Coburg to the north of Orvieto Street. We consulted with the community and concluded this consultation in May 2019. The budget for this project was $195,000 and construction was completed between September and December 2019.

    The works included:

    • The construction of new underground drainage system and pits.
    • Reconstructing the existing concrete kerb and channel.
    • Reconstructing the existing road pavement.
    • Laying a new asphalt road surface.
    • The reconstruction of vehicle crossings between new kerb and footpath edge.
    • The reinstatement of nature strips.
  • In 2019 we completed road reconstruction works on Rogers Street, Coburg between Ross Street and the Upfield Railway Line. The budget for this project was $335,000 and construction was completed between August and November 2019.

    The works included:

    • The construction of new underground drainage system and pits.
    • Reconstructing the existing concrete kerb and channel.
    • Reconstructing the existing road pavement.
    • Laying a new asphalt road surface.
    • The reconstruction of vehicle crossings between new kerb and footpath edge.
    • The reinstatement of nature strips.
  • In 2019 we completed road reconstruction works on Ronald Street, North Coburg between Ballard Avenue and Danthonia Street. The budget for this project was $370,000 and construction was completed between July and October 2019.

    The works included:

    • The construction of new underground drainage system and pits.
    • Reconstructing the existing concrete kerb and channel.
    • Reconstructing the existing road pavement.
    • Laying a new asphalt road surface.
    • The reconstruction of vehicle crossings between new kerb and footpath edge.
    • The reinstatement of nature strips.
  • In 2019 we completed road reconstruction works on Ross Street (Gaffney Street to Rogers Street), Armstrong Street, Ryan Street and Batman Avenue, Coburg. The budget for this project was $860,000 and construction was completed between December 2018 and August 2019.

    The works included:

    • The construction of a new underground drainage system and pits.
    • Reconstructing the existing concrete kerb and channel.
    • Reconstructing the existing road pavement.
    • Laying a new asphalt road surface.
    • The reconstruction of vehicle crossings between the new kerb and footpath edge.
    • The reinstatement of nature strips.
  • In 2019 we completed road reconstruction works on Waterfield Street, Coburg between Bell Street and Victoria. The budget for this project was $490,000 and construction was completed between October to November 2019.

    The works included:

    • Reconstructing bluestone kerb and channel that had sunk.
    • Reconstructing the existing road pavement to a depth of 100mm and laying a new asphalt road surface.
    • Reconstruction of failed asphalt footpath areas.

2018 to 2019 projects

  • In 2018 we completed pavilion works at Campbell Reserve in Coburg. This included an extension to the existing sports facilities adding four change rooms, umpire rooms, a first aid room, a player’s race and an upgrade to the existing DDA toilet.   • In 2018 we upgraded the park and play space at Campbell Reserve. This included new park fencing, work on the play space and picnic area, and landscape work. For more park details see the Campbell Reserve page.

  • In 2018 we completed road reconstruction works on Campbell Street, Coburg between De Carle Street and Barrow Street. The budget for this project was $1,235,000 and construction was completed between February and September 2018.

    The works included:

    • The construction of a new underground drainage system and pits.
    • Reconstructing the existing bluestone kerb and channel. The level will be altered to flatten the road and improve vehicle access into properties.
    • The reconstruction of the road pavement and laying a new asphalt road surface.
    • The reconstruction of vehicle crossings between the new kerb and footpath edge.

  • In 2018 we completed road reconstruction works on Carr Street, Coburg North between Merri Creek Bridge and De Chene Parade. The budget for this project was $125,200 and construction was completed between September and October 2018.

    The works included:

    • Reconstructing the existing road pavement.
    • Laying a new asphalt road surface.

  • In 2018 we completed road reconstruction on Cole Crescent, Coburg between Harding Street and Grant Street. The budget for the project was $390,000, and construction was between December 2017 and February 2018.

    The works included:

    • Reconstructing the existing concrete kerb and channel. The levels will be altered to flatten the road and improve vehicle access into properties.
    • The reconstruction of the road pavement and laying a new asphalt road surface.
    • The reconstruction of vehicle crossings between the new kerb and footpath edge.
    • The reinstatement of nature strips.
  • In 2018 we completed road reconstruction works on Franklin Street, Coburg between Rennie Street and Harding Street. The budget for this project was $290,000 and construction was completed between September and December 2018.

    The works included:

    • The construction of a new underground drainage system and pits.
    • Reconstructing the existing concrete kerb and channel.
    • Reconstructing the existing road pavement.
    • Laying a new asphalt road surface.
    • The reconstruction of vehicle crossings between the new kerb and footpath edge.
    • The reinstatement of nature strips.
  • In 2018 we completed pavilion refurbishment at Jackson Reserve in Coburg. This included a refurbishment of the amenities at the pavilion. The budget for this project was $141,000. For more park details see the Jackson Reserve page.

  • In 2018 we finished stage 3 of the Merlynston linear park development. This work took place between Tonkin Avenue and Rollo Street. Our aim with the linear park development plan was to improve the liveability of this area. We want to create a space for exercise, relaxation, play, and connecting with others and nature.

    In this stage we added sensory play using paving and hard materials for children to balance, stand and sit on. We also included some new play equipment. These new features use play moments to excite children as they use the space.

    Stage 4 of the development plan adds improvements north of Tonkin Avenue. It is planned to begin in the 2018-19 financial year. The design will have input from local residents, Melbourne Water representatives and students from Pascoe Vale North Primary School.

    Merlynston linear park development (Stage 3) documents:

  • In 2018 we finished stage 4 of the Merlynston linear park development. This stage included improvements north of Tonkin Avenue, which was designed and constructed with the input of local community members, Melbourne Water representatives and students from the nearby Pascoe Vale North Primary School.

    We consulted with the community about this stage of development and concluded this consultation in March 2019.

    This concludes the linear park development plan stages, which involved the construction of:

    • Improved pedestrian and bike links through the area
    • Tree planting and landscaping
    • A play space to complement the parkour structure (the yellow balls) on the corner of Lily and Guilfoyle Streets, including shelter and natural play
    • Small play and potentially exercise sites in various locations along the network of parks
    • Water sensitive urban design solutions, such as rain gardens, where appropriate
    • Investigation of an off-leash dog section in the park (the whole area is currently designated an on-leash dog site)
    • Traffic calming measures on the roads linking the parks.

    Merlynston linear park development (stage 4) documents:

  • In 2018 we completed refurbishments on the Merlynston Progress Hall in Coburg. This included restoring the hall into a functional community space, accommodating around 80 people. The project had a budget of $900,000.

  • In 2018 we created a new enclosed dog park in Richards Reserve. This was part of our Domestic Animal Management Plan. This area is fenced off and has a two access gates. We designed this park for dogs to exercise and get mental stimulation. Spaces like this also help to prevent behavioural issues and give owners a place to practice controlling their dog in an enclosed area.

  • In 2018 we upgraded the public toilet at Robinson Reserve. This was part of the Moreland Public Toilet Strategy. This included removing the old toilets and building a new unisex accessible toilet. We also installed an accessible concrete path to access the new facility. The new toilet has a solar powered lock system and is only open during daylight hours. For more park details see the Robinson Reserve page

  • In 2018 we completed road reconstruction on The Grove, Coburg between Sydney Road and Barrow Street. The budget for this project was $890,000 and construction was between September 2017 and March 2018.

    The works included:

    • The construction of a new underground drainage system and pits.
    • Reconstructing the existing bluestone kerb and channel. The levels will be altered to flatten the road and improve vehicle access into properties.
    • The reconstruction of the road pavement and laying a new asphalt road surface.
    • The reconstruction of vehicle crossings between the new kerb and footpath edge.
    • The installation of rain gardens (landscaped garden beds that filter stormwater runoff from the roadway) to improve stormwater quality.
    • The reinstatement of nature strips.
  • In 2018 we built a new toilet block on the corner of Waterfield Street and Victoria Street Mall. This was part of the Moreland Public Toilet Strategy.

    We removed the Exeloo toilet and built a new toilet block. This toilet block has 1 unisex DDA compliant accessible toilet and 2 ambulant unisex toilets. We also did some minor landscaping work in the area around the toilet block. To complete this work we had to move two disability parking spaces in the Waterfield Street car park.   • In 2018 we completed road reconstruction works on Queen Street, Coburg between Moreland Road and Lever Road. We consulted with the community in March 2017 and the design was completed in August 2017. The budget for this project was $903,500 and construction was completed between March and June 2018.

    The works included:

    • The construction of a new underground drainage system and pits.
    • Reconstructing the existing bluestone kerb and channel.The levels will be altered to flatten the road and improve vehicle access into properties.
    • The reconstruction of the road pavement and laying a new asphalt road surface.
