Brunswick Mechanics Institute and Brunswick Town Hall - Forecourts improvement

Project background

Brunswick Mechanics Institute

Council is undertaking the design for the Brunswick Mechanics Forecourt and Brunswick Town Hall Forecourt, as an action from the Brunswick Structure Plan.

The project aims to to enhance the civic and cultural focus of the precinct, and to improve the public realm of these civic buildings.

The new design for the public space includes:

  • An outdoor civic space with reclaimed bluestone and timber seating
  • New timber decking
  • Upgrades to forecourt paving
  • Improved lighting
  • Landscaping, including lawn and rain gardens to address the urban heat island effect
  • Footpath upgrade including feature paving and new kerb and channel
  • Additional seating near tram and bus stops (Brunswick Mechanics Institute Forecourt)
  • Street furniture upgrade including drinking fountain and improved lighting.

Major stages of the project

The public tender process for this project has concluded, and the construction was awarded at the Council Meeting on 13 February 2019. We expect construction to begin in early March 2019 subject to traffic management plan approval by VicRoads. Construction will take approximately 6 months and will be done in stages. During the construction, Council will make every effort to minimise disruption to the businesses and residents.

If you have any questions regarding the construction works please contact the Site Project Manager, Robert Kennedy on 9464 3797 from Evergreen Civil contractor.  We look forward to your continued support on this initiative for Brunswick.

The public tender for construction of the streetscape works was advertised on on 17 November 2018. The tender report was presented at the Council Meeting for consideration.

The final concept design has been finalised for the project. Download the Final Concept Design (PDF 3Mb).

Feedback received from the community consultation in June 2018 for the Draft Concept Plan has informed the development of the final design.  The Final Concept Plan shown on the back of this letter has sought to address various issues including safety, amenity, and presentation of these important forecourt spaces.

The Final Concept Plan also indicates the replacement of seven existing Ornamental Pear trees along the northern boundary with two new Chinese Elm trees. These new trees will offer a broader canopy and will tie in with the new street trees on Dawson Street.

The public consultation for the project was held in June 2018 and was closed on Friday 6 July 2018.

The consultation included a survey and virtual reality information sessions. Participants were able to immerse in a virtual reality experience and see what the forecourts will look like.

The information collected from the survey is available in this Community Engagement Summary (PDF 210Kb). (PDF 210Kb)

The consultation was also conducted with letter to all properties in the project area and wider catchment, including traders and residents, to seek their views on the Draft Concept Plan Brunswick Mechanics Institute and Brunswick Town Hall Forecourts (PDF 776Kb)

Budget for construction: $1.2 million
Budget for design: $70,000
