Austin Crescent Reserve, Pascoe Vale - Play upgrade
The play space at Austin Crescent Reserve on Northumberland Road in Pascoe Vale, is being upgraded this financial year as Council continues to implement the Moreland Play Strategy 2016-20 (PDF 2Mb).
A draft concept plan (PDF 5Mb) was prepared for the proposed play space upgrade at Austin Crescent Reserve, and residents invited to submit their feedback on the draft concept plan.
The consultation period finished on 21 March 2019, with feedback generally very supportive of the proposals in the draft concept plan. A complete summary of feedback (PDF 89Kb) received has been prepared and is available for download from this web page.
This upgrade coincides with recent consultation on the draft Westbreen Creek Conservation and Development Plan, which supports the play and picnic space upgrade at Austin Crescent Reserve, and proposes the opportunity to construct a wetland system to treat stormwater runoff within Gavin Park.
The play space and picnic area at Austin Crescent will be upgraded at a larger scale and with increased range of play opportunities, anticipating future removal of the existing play equipment at Gavin Park.
No works are proposed within Gavin Park until future funding is confirmed.
Current works - Austin Crescent Reserve
A draft concept plan (PDF 5Mb) has been prepared for the proposed play space upgrade at Austin Crescent Reserve.
The aim of the proposed upgrade is to create a fresh new playspace, comprising nature play elements together with contemporary play equipment, to provide fun and challenging play for a broad range of ages and abilities.
Some of the key elements of the draft concept plan are:
- Nature based play with rocks and logs for clambering, stepping and balancing, and for encouraging imaginative play
- Exciting new combination unit with various playful activities such as climbing, balancing and a slide.
- 'Flying fox' cable way
- Swings, with the addition of a basket swing
- Large group spring rocker and 'speed gyro' carousell
- 'Climbing hut' for our youngest climbers
- Extra seating and new drink fountain
- Planting of native trees
- Playful native fauna sculptures, including the Tawny Frogmouth that was recent spotted nesting near the play area
- New fencing along Northumberland Road frontage and between carpark and play space
The existing climbing net will be retained as part of the new play space and provision made for possible relocation of Clown Swing from Gavin Park.
Other planned works include upgrading of the existing carpark with screen planting along boundary with existing residences. A picnic shelter is proposed as future works and is currently unfunded
It is planned that the play space upgrade at Austin Crescent Reserve will commence in April 2019, and be completed during July 2019.
Community consultation was carried out over a two week period in March, including 'drop-in' sessions at Austin Crescent Reserve where people could discuss the upgrade proposals with Council staff.
Residents were invited to submit their feedback on the draft concept plan and, at the close of consultation on 21 March 2019, the feedback received was generally very supportive of the proposals in the draft concept plan.
There were numerous calls for the old Clown Swing to be salvaged from the future redevelopment of Gavin Park if it goes ahead, and relocated at Austin Crescent play space. Provision is now being made in the construction plans for Austin Crescent to enable the Clown Swing to be refurbished and installed in the new play space at a future date.
A number of other requests for additional items we also received and these are all addressed in the Austin Crescent Play Upgrade Feedback Summary (PDF 89Kb) that is available for download from this web page. This report gives a full outline of all feedback received and detailed responses to requests and comments.
Work on the site will commence as early as April, and the playground will be shut down until July 2019, when works are programmed for completion.
The existing footpath will remain open for use for much of that time but will be closed off for at least one week to enable a new connecting path from Northumberland Road and joining with the existing footpath to be constructed.
We have arranged procurement of the play equipment and associated works and expect the new play space to be completed during July 2019.
