Culture Vulture – Read More Program April / May 2008

11.15 am – noon, first Tuesday of the month commencing Tuesday 1 April 2008, Brunswick Library

12.15 pm – 1 pm, second Wednesday of the month commencing Wednesday 9 April 2008, Coburg Library … feel free to bring your lunch.

A monthly daytime program for book lovers! Come and enjoy a relaxed chat about books with library staff and other readers. Bring your current read or an old favourite to share, or just come along to hear about what others are enjoying.

Shoe and Tell

7 pm, Tuesday 13 May
Glenroy Library

Uncover the fascinating history of shoes with Ann Dixon from Bygone Days. Ann will present a datashow of shoe history, then show examples from her collection, including men’s shoes. She will cover shoe fashion from1850 to modern day classics by designers like Dior, Versace and others. Do you have a unique shoe? Bring it along to show and tell.

The GAP Experience

GAP is a non-profit organisation that provides opportunities for young people to volunteer overseas, immerse themselves in another culture, challenge themselves and make a difference. Find out all you need to know about becoming a GAP Volunteer. Bring along your friends, and hear first-hand from an ex-GAPper about the experience of volunteering overseas.

CERES

Coburg Library

Chris Ennis, Manager of the CERES Organic Farm and Training Programs, has a passion for urban farming and local food systems. For the past seven years he has been working and teaching at CERES in Brunswick, demonstrating and inspiring urban farmers, teachers and food shoppers. Join Chris as he discusses some of his projects at CERES, including organic market gardens, community co-ops and training programs. He will also talk about projects he has visited while travelling in America and Europe.

Moreland’s Arts and Culture

2 pm Thursday 22 May
Meeting Room E, Brunswick Town Hall

From street parties to public sculpture, the arts play a vital role in the life of Moreland. As part of the Talks on Moreland series, hear about the diverse programs, projects and events supported by Council’s Arts and Culture Department. Learn how the arts contribute to individual and community well being. The talk will be followed by a guided tour of the Counihan Gallery In Brunswick’s current exhibition.

Have fun with Cheng Fan and Junqi as they lead these monthly Chinese pre-school story times.

Live at the Library

Each year a free Live at the Library concert sees the Brunswick Library transformed into its former glory as a music venue to celebrate Moreland’s musical artists. 

The full program features local musicians of varying ages and backgrounds with different music styles including jazz, blues, world, pop, rap and rock and attracts a large and diverse audience. 

In 2005, Live at the Library expanded to include monthly Saturday morning music programs rotating between the Brunswick, Coburg and Glenroy Libraries. Live at the Library: the Saturday sessions features musicians from the local community playing a variety of music; Secondary schools with music programs are also involved.

Talks on Moreland

Third Thursday of the month (except January) at 2 pm.

Check event flyers as dates, times and venues vary.

Talks on Moreland features accounts by speakers who have lived or worked in Moreland as they share their knowledge of the diverse features and rich heritage of our municipality. Talks are free and a light afternoon tea is served.

Book Clubs for Adult Readers

Reading doesn’t have to be a solitary passion. Book clubs are an increasingly popular way for readers to share their love of reading with others. They offer great opportunities to meet new people and have stimulating and interesting discussions in a relaxed social environment.

Moreland’s library service has three book clubs for adults. Each book club decides what book titles will be discussed during the year and the library supports the book club by making relevant titles available to them.

Scrabble Clubs

Exercise your mind and maybe learn a new word or two by joining a Scrabble Club at the library.  

Scrabble fans and new players are all welcome to come along to the:

  • Fawkner Library Scrabble Club which meets every Monday at 1.30 pm; or
  • Glenroy Library Scrabble Club which meets every Thursday at 2 pm. 

People can attend every week or just drop in when they wish.

BrowsA

If you are 12 years or older, you are welcome to “keep cool” and “wind down” at browsA held at the Fawkner Library on the first Friday of each month between 3 pm and 4.30 pm.  

There are different activities each month and all computers are reserved and free of charge for exclusive use by youth during this time (providing you have a registered Internet card)!

LARFF = Lots A Reading For Fun

for Teens

Want to get together with others teens who like books and have heaps of fun together ?

LARFF is a youth book club held at the Brunswick Library once a month on a Thursday afternoon at 4 pm. 

Any teen aged 12 years or older are welcome. The book club is theme based with themes including fantasy, soap and realism The program hosts guest author/speakers during the year (group's choice) and LARFF members will also have the opportunity to select books for the library.

Free pizza and coke is provided at each session. Members of LARFF get VIP status in the library entitling them to 10 free computer print outs and one free reservation a month. If a member brings a friend to LARFF, that number will be doubled!

Read Rap 

for Primary School Aged Children

Join the Read Rap Club with other primary school-aged children and have a great time chatting about books and being among the first to check out any books, videos and CDs

Each session lasts for approximately 45 minutes and snacks and drinks are available. All sessions start at 4 pm at the following libraries:

  • Last Thursday of the month at the Campbell Turnbull Library
  • Last Wednesday of the month at the Coburg Library
  • Second Tuesday of the month at the Fawkner Library
  • Second last Wednesday of the month at the Glenroy Library

During Read Rap the children take part in any or all of the following activities:

  • Looking at books relating to a particular theme of interest to the group such as humour and fantasy
  • Talking about books they have recently enjoyed reading
  • Borrowing new books and audio-visual materials relevant to their age and interests
  • Enjoying fun book-related activities
  • Learning about forthcoming book related events and activities at the Moreland City Library service

Rhyme-Times  

For babies under 18 months

The Moreland Library Service offers Rhyme-Time sessions for babies under 18 months. 

This is a fun-filled time (about 30 minutes) as you and your baby learn or relearn those childhood rhymes. All sessions start at 11.30 am at the following libraries:

  • Every Thursday at the Coburg Library.
  • First Tuesday of the month at the Fawkner Library
  • Last Wednesday of the month at the Glenroy Library
  • Last Friday of the month at the Brunswick Library
