Street tree planting
Council plants street trees every year between May and September. Tree planting is planned according to suburbs and the number of streets that have missing trees as a result of removal.

How Council chooses what trees to plant
The Moreland Street Landscape Strategy provides the basis for all new street tree planting. It is a guide for Council staff, residents who want trees planted and for the wider community.
In implementing the strategy, Council will select local native or indigenous species when it is appropriate.
The advantages of planting indigenous tree species are that they:
- adapt easily to the local environment
- provide a food source and shelter for native animals such as birds and butterflies, and
- create a distinctive local character.
Council has identified six street landscape precincts in Moreland. A planting theme for each precinct has been developed by choosing particular types of trees and nature. There has been an extensive process of community consultation in choosing these trees.
Plants are selected on the basis of soil type and geology as well as local character. Functional aspects are also considered, such as the size of nature strips and clearances for powerlines, traffic and street lighting.
Moreland's Street Landscape Strategy follows extensive research from Australian and international horticultural experts who contributed to a careful selection of local native plants.
Local native plants are those which originate from the Moreland area as opposed to native plants which could come from anywhere in Australia. Local native plant species are preferred.
