White Ribbon

“Violence against women will only cease when men join with women to put an end to it.”

The White Ribbon Campaign is the first male-led campaign to end violence against women in the world. The campaign encourages men to take a stand and say that violence, in any form, is never acceptable.

November 25 marks both the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and White Ribbon Day, the first day of the White Ribbon Campaign.

Wearing a white ribbon is a personal pledge that the wearer does not excuse violence against women, and is committed to supporting community action to stop violence by men against women.

Men who wear a white ribbon demonstrate their opposition to violence against women and their commitment to equality between women and men. Men of all ages, from all workplaces, of all political affiliations and of all racial, ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds, sexual orientation and physical ability are needed to help establish community leadership to stop violence against women.

John Williams is the current president of the Coburg Cricket Club and Principal of Moreland Primary School. He has been a White Ribbon Ambassador for the past three years.

In his role as school Principal, it is mandatory to report any children who may be experiencing violence in the home. John also recognised parents who were experiencing forms of violence in their homes and felt disempowered and unsure of how to help. He learnt about the White Ribbon Campaign and decided to become an Ambassador.

White Ribbon Ambassadors are men and boys who live the Oath to never commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women. As the leaders and faces of this male-led Campaign, Ambassadors reflect on and incorporate White Ribbon values into their daily lives at home, at work and in the community. By living these values, and by being a role model for other men and boys, Ambassadors further the work of the Campaign.

As an Ambassador, John now feels better resourced to provide advice to people not only within his school but also at Coburg Cricket Club. At the club, John annually speaks about the White Ribbon Campaign where the information is well-received and taken seriously. Members of the Coburg Cricket Club understand that being aware of and ignoring violence against women is just as bad a committing such an act.

Glenroy Football Club also has its own White Ribbon Ambassador – Ossie Salvatico. Ossie’s ambassadorship came out of the AFL Victoria’s Fair Game Respect Matters program. The 'Fair Game Respect Matters' program helps clubs create welcoming, socially inclusive environments. Research suggests that gender-equitable policies, programs and environments, which are based on respect, reduce the rates of violence against women.

If you would like more information about how to get involved please visit the White Ribbon website.

The "Redback Family" gets behind this appeal to put a smile on a child's face at Christmas and each year the number of presents donated has increased.

Good Sports

Is your sports club Good Sports accredited?

The Good Sports program is an initiative of the Australian Drug Foundation (ADF) to develop safer and healthier communities. The program helps sporting clubs manage alcohol responsibly and reduce alcohol related problems such as binge and underage drinking.

Council fully supports the Good Sports Program - as per the Sports Ground User Guide; clubs that hold a liquor license are required to register with the program. Council is working together with the ADF to encourage Moreland clubs to register and go through an accelerated version of program. Good Sports is also supported by your sporting association and Victoria Police.

Please register your club before Friday 27 January by contacting Bill Karametos on 9278 8103.
