Coburg comes alive with a spectacular array of colour and culture!

Join us for Coburg Carnivale 2017!

As part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival, this free two-day program of interactive, roaming and pop-up art and entertainment will showcase local artists, culture, people and places of Coburg.

Brand new artworks and experiences created especially for this year’s Carnivale await you! Come and learn the ancient art of print-making in the mysterious and kitsch Asian Grocery, grab a bunch of friends and explore Reach Out Sounds, and share your stories of Coburg on film at ReCollection.

There is much in store for visitors of all ages to the Carnivale this year; including the quirky and unexpected travels of Crate Expectations, the Sweet Tastes of Coburg walking tour, plus music, dance, face painting, local history talks and penny-farthings!

The Program

Asian Grocery

Drop into the Coburg Carnivale and immerse yourself in this Asian Grocery on steroids, where the kitsch-o-meter has been set to full on. Learn East Asian printmaking techniques with your friendly art grocers and contribute to this playful space where traditions, symbols and objects from this abundantly diverse region are getting repackaged and flying off the shelves.

Reach Out Sounds

Reach Out Sounds brings people together in the joy of creating music, even if you have never picked up an instrument in your life! In this work, you become the musical instrument, touching another participant triggers sounds that create an evolving musical work that is at once energetic, original and fleeting.

Crate Expectations

Crate Expectations is a roaming interactive robotic sculpture in the form of  a stack of vintage packing crates, appearing as an unexpected abstract cabinet of curiosities in public places. Originally commissioned by DAE White Night Ballarat 2017.

Sweet Tastes of Coburg


Sweet Tastes of Coburg is a multicultural sweets tour around the iconic Sydney Road precinct. This guided walking tour led by Neda Rahmani will showcase a selection of local traders, and offers tour participants an unique opportunity to taste sweets from around the world and discover the stories of their journey to Coburg.

Roaming and Pop-up Attractions

Come and see the diverse and vibrant program of entertainment that the Coburg Traders Association has specially created to complement this year’s Carnivale!

Visitors to Central Coburg and the Victoria Street Mall Precinct will see a variety of roaming and pop-up attractions from the Moreland and wider Melbourne area. There will be live music, Latin dance, local history talks, face painting with a twist and penny-farthings!

Featuring: Moreland City Brass Band / Melbourne Ukulele Collective / Zourouna / NAMAZU / Showy Dance / Coburg Historical Society / Face Paint by Children / Dan Bolwel Penny Farthing.

Inclusion at Coburg Carnivale

At Moreland City Council the Arts and Culture Unit are committed to working towards making our festivals and events more inclusive.

One of the ways we are doing this is by providing two Auslan interpreters for the whole four hour program on each day at this year’s two-day Coburg Carnivale event. You can book the Auslan interpreters for an hour or longer depending on demand.

  • Meet us at the Access Desk in Victoria Street Mall; and sign up on the Auslan bookings board for Friday or Saturday or email Metro Access to sign up prior to the days of the carnivale. 
  • Look for the Auslan symbol sign to find the Access Desk.

  • Coburg Carnivale is mostly outdoors in the Victoria Street Mall.
  • The ReCollection Recorder sessions and pre-recorded story screenings are inside Coburg Library; and
  • The Sweet Tastes of Coburg walking tour is not fully accessible. If you would like further information, please phone 9240 1111.
