Save water at home
- Install a rainwater tank and connect it to your toilet, laundry and garden hose. Tanks come in small and large sizes and different styles. Some tanks have a government rebate.
- Install a three star water-efficient showerhead. Save up to 13,500 litres of water per person each year based on a seven minute shower average.
- Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth and shaving. Save 4,000 litres of water a year if you brush for 3 minutes. Use a glass of water to rinse your mouth instead. Turn off the tap while shaving and save up to 3,500 litres per year.
- Install a dual-flush toilet and save over 35,000 litres a year for a family of four. If you can’t do this, put a filled water bottle in the toilet cistern to use less water.
- Use a water-saving washing machine. Use washing machine with a four-star water rating or a front loading washing machine, which uses up to 50 per cent less water.
- Change the water level on your washing machine. Washing machines use about 120 litres of water per load. Changing the water level to match the amount of washing.
- Look for water efficient ratings when buying new appliances. The more stars, the more water efficient .
