Creeks and waterways
Moreland has five significant creeks including Moonee Ponds Creek and Merri Creeks. Merlynston, Westbreen and Edgars Creeks are smaller creeks that run off Moonee Ponds Creek and Merri Creek.
The community caring for our creeks
People from the community have done lots of work to revegetate our creeks. On community planting days, people plant indigenous plants to provide habitat for our native birds and animals. Some animal and bird species that left the creeks after urbanisation have now returned. The Sacred King Fisher bird, the Growling Grass Frog and the Flame Robin are just a few of the species that have returned to use the creek corridor for habitat.
Creek management committees
Creek management committees do projects that care for our creeks and run some community planting days.
Council is a member of two of these committees – the Moonee Ponds Creek Management Committee and the Merri Creek Management Committee.
Friends groups
Friends groups, such as the Friends of the Merri Creek, are groups of local volunteers that improve the habitat and biodiversity of creeks.
Activities of friends groups are on their websites and include:
- community planting days
- picking up rubbish and litter
- talks, walks and tours
- campaigns against major threats to the Creek
- community education and planning, and
- water quality testing.
