Moreland Integrated Water Management Plan
Moreland Integrated Water Management Plan 2009–10 to 2012–13
The Moreland Integrated Water Management Plan sets Council’s strategic direction for the sustainable management of water resources in Moreland.
The plan was developed in response to current and emerging issues impacting on the management of water resources, in particular climate change, drought and population growth.
Moreland Council taking action
The Moreland Integrated Water Management Plan focuses on actions Council agrees to do to reduce potable water consumption, reduce stormwater pollution and increase the use of alternative water sources, such as water recycling and stormwater reuse.
We recognise Council has a significant role in encouraging sustainable water management within the community and this is also reflected in the actions within the plan.
Benefits of implementing the plan
- provide greater security of supply for Council assets and operations
- ensure Council can continue to provide and maintain valuable community assets and services, such as sports fields, passive open space
- reduce the pollution and flood impacts of Council capital projects and private developments
- increase efficiency of water use providing significant cost savings due to the rapidly increasing cost of water and sewage disposal
- use major Council infrastructure projects, such as The Coburg Initiative, to ‘showcase’ more sustainable water management practices, and
- reduce future price impacts of increasing water prices.
Priority areas
The targets and actions within the plan incorporate the principles of ‘integrated water management’ into Council and the community’s water management practices.
They focus on seven priority areas:
- the highest water consuming areas of Council's activities
- Council activities with the greatest impact on water quality
- community engagement and education
- sustainable water management in private development
- monitoring and reporting progress
- working with external organisations, and
- capacity building.
