Rubbish collection

Council collects rubbish weekly from all residential, non-residential and non-rateable properties. Property owners pay an annual Waste Charge for the rubbish bins that Council collects.

The Waste Charge is based on the size of your bin.

Bins

Garbage bin (weekly), recycling bin (weekly) and green waste bin (fortnightly).

When is my rubbish collected?

Council collects your rubbish and recycling bins on the same day every week and your green waste bin on the same day every two weeks.

Rubbish and recycling bins are usually collected in the morning or early afternoon. Green waste bins are usually collected later in the day.

Once a year Council also collects hard waste. This year's annual hard waste collection happened in April. The next hard waste collection will be 2010.

What day?

The day of rubbish collection depends on where you live.

2009 rubbish, recycling and green waste calendar

Council’s rubbish, recycling and green waste calendar lists the dates that Council collects your bins. New calendars for 2009 were delivered to all residents in December 2008.

Where do I put my rubbish bin?

Put your rubbish bin on the kerb on the edge of the street. Face the bin to the street. Make sure there are no objects within 30 cm of the bin such as a car, tree or another bin.

What if my rubbish is not collected?

Contact Council if your rubbish is not collected. Usually Council asks you to put your bin out again the next day and Council collects it then.

What goes in your rubbish bin

Put all rubbish in your bin except for asbestos, household chemicals, motor oil, smoke detectors, toner cartridges, aerosol cans, and medicines. Take these to a transfer station.

Use your recycling bin for newspapers, magazines, paper, cartons, bottles and jars. Use a green waste bin for garden cuttings, grass and branches.

Please do not overfill your bins as this can create litter. Bins weighing over 30 kilograms will not be collected.

Missing, stolen and damaged bins

If your bin has been damaged or stolen Council will repair or replace it. Contact Council to report a damaged or stolen bin.

A bin is considered damaged and will be repaired if it is missing its wheels or lid. If the bin has a split body it will be replaced with a new bin. Damaged bins must be placed on the naturestrip to await repairs/replacement.

To prevent theft or damage to your bins remove them within 24 hours of your waste collection.

How to order new bins

If you move into a new property and there are no bins already on site, contact Council to order bins and arrange delivery.

Extra rubbish bins

Council allows extra rubbish bins for an additional annual charge.

Residents with an 80 litre bin can request another 80 litre bin. Residents with a 120 litre bin can request another 80 litre bin or 120 litre bin. To request an additional bin, fill in the request for increased garbage capacity application form (DOC 93Kb) and return the completed form to Council.

Before you request an extra bin, think about reducing your waste by  recycling and composting or ordering a green waste bin if you don't already have one.

Extra bin for medical reasons

If you, or someone living with you, has a medical condition that results in the need for extra garbage capacity, you may be eligible for a concession rate on an extra bin. To apply, fill in the application for concession - increased garbage capacity based on a medical condition (DOC 103Kb) and return the completed form to Council.

Extra bin for a large family

If you have a large family and produce more rubbish than you can fit in your existing rubbish bin you may be eligible for a concession rate on an extra bin. Concessions for large families will be based on one or two parents and six immediate children. To apply, fill in the application for concession - increased garbage capacity based on a large family (DOC 104Kb) and return the completed form to Council.

Waste charge: less waste, less cost

Council wants to reduce waste in Moreland.

We encourage residents and business to create less waste by recycling and composting. Use a smaller bin and pay a smaller waste charge.

Moreland Waste and Litter Strategy 2007-12

The Moreland Waste and Litter Strategy 2007-12 (PDF 2Mb) aims to build on the gains Council has made in waste management by beginning to tackle the difficult task of waste minimisation. Key objectives of the strategy include:

  • reduce waste to landfill by 3% per annum
  • increase the amount of waste that is diverted for reuse and recycling
  • reduce the amount of litter and dumped rubbish
  • undertake and promote waste minimisation initiatives.
