Green waste

Man Putting Branches in Green Waste bin

Green waste collection

Residents and businesses can use a special green waste bin for cuttings from grass, plants and trees.

Council collects your green waste bin every two weeks.

Council’s green waste bin has a light green lid.

What is green waste

  • branches
  • grass clippings
  • leaves
  • non-noxious weeds.

When is my green waste bin collected?

Council’s rubbish, recycling and green waste calendar has the 2009 dates that Council collects your green waste bin.

Contact Council for a copy of the calendar, pick one up from a Citizens Service Centre or view and print a calendar online.

Order a green waste bin

You can order:

  • one 120 litre green waste bin for $65
  • two 120 litre green waste bins for $130, or
  • one 240 litre green waste bin for $130

Download, print and fill in the Green Waste Bin and Compost Bin Order Form (PDF 1Mb).

Post or bring the form to Council with payment. Delivery is free and takes up to two weeks.

What is not green waste

Council may use the green waste it collects from homes and businesses on other gardens.

Please do not put these things in your green waste bin:

  • noxious weeds such as ivy, blackberries or Paterson’s Curse
  • garden waste in plastic bags
  • wire, cloth, material, plastic or nylon ties
  • soil
  • tree roots and stumps
  • recyclable materials, or
  • normal rubbish.

Bins that are overfilled or weigh more than 30 kilograms will not be collected.

What happens to green waste

The green waste that you place in your green waste bin is taken to a local processor where it is turned into mulch or compost. These products are treated to meet Australian Standards.

Keeping green waste out of landfill helps to reduce carbon emissions. Buying back green waste in the form of compost or mulch closes the loop on green waste recycling.

For more information on using and purchasing compost and mulch visit the Healthy and Sustainable Garden Program.

Recycle a natural Christmas tree

You can recycle a natural Christmas tree through Council's green waste service. Simply cut the tree up to fit in your green waste bin (maximum diameter 10 centimetres) and it will be collected on your usual green waste collection day. Please note - only green waste placed inside the green waste bin will be collected.
