Dumped rubbish
Leaving rubbish on the footpath, a park laneway or street is illegal.
Illegally dumped rubbish includes plastic bags of rubbish, green waste, furniture, computer monitors and TVs and can include items left outside a charity or op shop.
Fines for illegally dumped rubbish
When reports of illegally dumped rubbish are received, Council:
- looks at the rubbish and tries to find who dumped the rubbish
- removes the rubbish
- if able to identify the person who dumped the rubbish sends a notice to them advising of a breach of the Environmental Protection Act 1970, and
- gives the perpetrators a fine and clean-up costs.
On the spot fines for littering range upwards of $119 to $239 for small items to a maximum of $4000 if the matter is prosecuted in court.
Litter thrown from a vehicle can get a maximum penalty of over $6000 or one month imprisonment or both.
