Dumped rubbish
Leaving rubbish in a public space, footpath, park or street is illegal.
Dumped rubbish includes plastic bags of rubbish, furniture and items left outside a charity or op shop.
Fines for dumped rubbish
When Council gets a report of dumped rubbish, Council:
- looks at the rubbish and tries to find who dumped the rubbish
- removes the rubbish
- where information identifying the person who may have dumped the rubbish sends a notice to them advising of a breach of the Environmental Protection Act 1970, and
- gives the perpetrators a fine and clean-up costs.
On the spot fines for littering range upwards of $107 for small items and a maximum of $4000.
Litter thrown from a vehicle can get a maximum penalty of up to $6000 or one month imprisonment or both.
