D - detox your home - donations

Detox your home

Leftover and unwanted chemicals and products containing hazardous materials need careful disposal.

Sustainability Victoria accept a limited range of products at permanent Detox Your Home facilities around Melbourne.

Temporary mobile collections also happen, and a wider range of materials are accepted. Collections are for residential properties only - waste from commercial properties will not be accepted.

This service is free and there is no limit on the number of items dropped off, but individual items must not exceed 20 litres.

Items that cannot be accepted are:

  • Chemicals used by businesses commercial and industrial purposes
  • Motor oil 
  • Containers over 20 litres or 20 kilograms or empty chemical containers
  • Farm chemicals
  • Waste asbestos, ammunition and flares

Types of unwanted household chemicals accepted for disposal are:

  • Household chemicals such as aerosol cans, insect sprays, perst poisons, household cleaners, pharmaceuticals adnd mothballs.  
  • Garden chemicals such as fertilisers, fungicides, herbicides and insecticides.
  • Automotive chemicals such as transmission fluids, batteries and battery acid, brake fluid, car wax solvent and fuels (such as petrol, diesel, kerosene).
  • Workshop chemicals including paint strippers, solvent-based glues, water and oil-based paints, paint thinner, acetone, turpentine, varnish and wood preservative.
  • Other miscellaneous chemicals accepted are acids and alkalis, artists' paints and supplies, photographic chemicals, fibreglass resins (not mixed), extinguishers, gas cylinders, swimming pool chemicals and mercury batteries.      

                         

The following safety measures should be taken when transporting chemicals to the Works Depo

  • make sure lids are tightly fitted
  • place liquids on a tray or in a plastic bucket so any spills are contained
  • pack powders and solids securely
  • keep corrosive chemicals, such as battery acid, away from poisons
  • keep oxidising agents, such as peroxide, away from all other materials
  • travel with your car windows down if carrying flammable or odorous materials, and
  • double-wrap old liquid containers in plastic bags to prevent leaking.

The service is free and residents from all municipalities can use any of the collections.

Permanent Detox Facilities

The nearest Detox Your Home permanent facilities are located at Banyule Waste Recovery Centre, Brimbank City Council Depot and Darebin Resource Recovery Centre

Only six items are accepted at these facilities, these are:

  • paint
  • motor oil
  • gas cylinders
  • car batteries
  • household batteries,
  • fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs).

Donations

Many charitable organisations in Moreland accept quality second-hand furniture, clothing, books and household items in good condition.

Do not leave bags or furniture outside an op shop or next to a charity bin. It is illegal. You can be reported and fined for illegally dumping rubbish.

Diabetes Australia - Victoria

Diabetes Australia - Victoria will collect clothing, shoes, home wares, small electrical appliances, books, toys and kitchen utensils from your doorstep within 24 hours of calling their collection line on 9923 8400. All items must be light enough to be lifted by one person.

Brotherhood of St Laurence

Brotherhood of St Laurence will collect any household furniture in reasonable condition. They do not collect damaged furniture or electrical items.

Brotherhood of St Laurence reserves the right to decide on the quality of the furniture at the time of collection. To arrange a collection please call 1300 366 283 or email collection@bsl.org.au

St Vincent De Paul Society of Victoria

St Vincent De Paul Society of Victoria will collect any household furniture in reasonable condition. They do not collect damaged furniture or electrical items.

St Vincent De Paul Society Victoria reserves the right to decide on the quality of the furniture at the time of collection. To arrange a collection please call 1800 621 349.
