Honouring Women in Moreland Awards
Council's Honouring Women in Moreland Awards recognises the important contributions of women in Moreland to social justice and the wellbeing of our community. The awards are open to women who live or work in Moreland.
Council started the Honouring Women in Moreland Awards in 2003 to celebrate International Women's Day.
The awards acknowledge the leadership demonstrated by a person or group in the areas of political, business, advocacy, organisational or community.
2012 Awards
The 2012 Honouring Women in Moreland award winners were announced at a ceremony on Thursday 15 March 2012 at Coburg Town Hall.
Approximately 200 people attended the awards - made up of community members, service providers, musicians, local businesses, Councillors and Moreland staff. There was lots of chatting, excitement, appreciation and wonderful feeling of being a part of one community.
Co-founder of FlexiCar, Monique Conheady was guest speaker on the night and guests were also treated to entertainment from Sal Kimber and Ladyfingers.
This year’s awards also showcased an important part of our community, the Moreland Women's Business Network, with stalls open to attendees from early on in the night.
There were eleven nominations this year and three winners:

Winner
Betty Burgess
Betty has been a dedicated and inspiring member of the Country Women’s Association (CWA) since 1975, and is currently President of the Pascoe Vale branch. She served as State President 1999-2001 when she represented the CWA on the ‘Women Shaping the Nation’ Committee and the enactment of federation. At the local level Betty has improved resources for women, children and families through extensive committee work with kindergartens, schools, scouts and girl guides. Her approach has encouraged many other women to follow her path.
Category 2 - Sustainability - communities building resilience in response to a changing environment.
Winner
Susan Harris
Susan has managed the Sussex Neighbourhood House for the last twenty years. She has played a major role in developing programs that empower and equip women for participation and leadership within their diverse communities. Susan has demonstrated extraordinary commitment to training and mentoring staff, as well as addressing the needs of CALD communities, youth, families/women with special needs, seniors, the disengaged and socially isolated. Her work has spawned the formation of two key support groups: Moreland Carers Association and Parent Carers Support Network.

Parents and Friends
For 50 years Parents and Friends of the College has served Pascoe Vale Girls College with faithful dedication. They are an active, caring, inclusive group, raising money for yearly scholarships for students in years 7 to 12. By sharing their experience in the work force with their families and in activities in the wider community, the group harnesses their resources for one clear objective - to ensure the girls of Pascoe Vale Girls College “Become the women they are meant to be”.
