Responsible gambling
Moreland has 15 gaming venues with a total of 766 electronic gaming machines or ‘pokies’.
Council and responsible gambling
Council works with the state government, community support services and gambling venues to promote responsible gambling.
Council makes sure the state government is aware of the harm related to excessive gambling in Moreland and considers measures to address this as part of the State's gambling regulation.
We recently advocated to include responsible gambling objectives as part of the state government’s Regional Electronic Gaming Machine Caps Review and gaming machines licence review.
We also participate in community education campaigns such as the annual statewide Responsible Gambling Awareness Week.
Council and pokie machines
The state government makes the laws on gambling and sets the gaming maching density across the State.
Parts of Moreland have a cap on the number of gaming machines and has reached the State's target density of ten machines per 1000 residents.
Currently Glenroy, Gowanbrae, Hadfield, Oak Park, Pascoe Vale and Pascoe Vale South do not have a cap on the number of gaming machines.
Applicants for new gaming machines in an existing venue or a new venue require a planning permit from Council as well as a licence approval from the Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation.
Council considers the potential economic and social impacts of new gaming machines or gaming venues in its decisions.
Moreland Responsible Gambling Strategy
Council’s actions on pokie machines in Moreland are based on the Moreland Responsible Gambling Strategy 2005-2008 (DOC 509Kb). Gaming venues and problem gambling support services gave Council their input to the strategy.
