Cell 1
Australia has three levels of government:
- federal government
- state or federal government, and
- local government (councils or shires).
Cell 2
Your local Council looks after the area you live in by keeping it safe and clean, and helping all people in the community.
It provides community services such as:
- garbage, recycling and garden waste collection
- health services
- places for sport and leisure, and
- libraries.
Cell 3
The state or territory government looks after things that affect a particular state or territory, such as:
- hospitals, roads, trams and trains
- police, courts and prisons, and
- water, gas and electricity.
Cell 4
The federal government looks after:
- immigration
- national highways, and
- defence.
Cell 5
Your local Council makes local laws to help make the community a safe, happy and healthy place for everybody to live.
Local laws are rules that encourage residents to think of their neighbours.
Cell 6
Your local Council exists to help people. You can get help from your local Council by:
- telephoning Council
- visiting Council in person, or
- looking at the Council website.
