Keeping your cool in a heatwave: CALD COM storyboard text and images
Cell 1
Extreme heat or heatwave, can be a serious risk to our health and wellbeing. It can also affect our daily lives.
Cell 2
Planning ahead is one of the best ways to keep your cool during a heatwave. You should look at things at home like:
- putting up a shade cloth or outside blinds
- servicing fans and cooling devices before summer, and
- buying extra food, such as frozen goods to last a few days
Cell 3
It’s important to check on others at risk during heatwave.
And don’t forget your pets and native animals.
Cell 4
Plan your day so that you can stay out of the heat. Try:
- shopping after dark for fresh produce such as milk and bread
- paying bills over the phone or online
- keeping exercise or gardening to the early morning or late evening, and
- finding a public space nearby your home like a shopping centre, library or pool in case it gets too hot.
Cell 5
If you have a health issue talk to your doctor. Never leave children or pets in locked cars in the heat.
Cell 6
On very hot days keep your cool by:
- closing doors, windows, blinds and curtains during the day
- eating cool foods like salad and fruits and drinking cold water
- taking a cold shower, and
- wearing loose, light clothing.
Cell 7
There are lots of programs (some are free) and ideas that can help keep your cool in the heat.
