Building permits: CALD COM storyboard text and images
Cell 1
Your local council helps make the community a safe and healthy place for everybody to live by making sure federal, state and local laws are correctly implemented.
These laws and regulations help residents to consider their neighbours.
Cell 2
If you plan to build a new house or a large extension to your home or if you plan to construct a high fence or build a large garage, you must have a building permit.
Cell 3
A building permit is required before most building work is starting. A permit prevents the construction of buildings, fences or house extensions, which are too big, dangerous or illegal.
Cell 4
Building without a permit is illegal. An illegal construction may also be dangerous as it may be a fire hazard, pose a health risk or could damage the environment.
Cell 5
Before beginning any building works you must contact your local council to find out if you require a building permit.
For some projects you may need to seek a Planning Approval. Your local council is there to help you. You can contact your local Council by:
- telephoning Council
- visiting Council in person, or
- viewing the Council website.
