Disability in Moreland
Disability affects more than 20 per cent of people in Moreland. Disability can be caused by an illness, an accident or a genetic condition, or be a result of getting older.
In the future there will be more people with disabilities in Moreland. Disability increases with age, our population is growing older and life expectancies are higher.
Council wants people with a disability and their carers in Moreland to be able to:
- get to the places you want
- get the information you need
- feel safe
- feel part of the community
- participate in decision making
- access services you need, and
- have opportunities to work, exercise, socialise and be creative.
Council and disability
Council supports people with disabilities to participate in the community. Council:
- has home, personal and respite care and community transport services
- employs a MetroAccess Officer to run the MetroAccess program
- helps local businesses be accessible
- runs programs like leadership mentoring, and
- runs disability awareness training for Council staff.
Disability laws
From 1 July 2007, the Disability Act 2006 is the new law for people with a disability in Victoria.
The law talks about:
- your rights and responsibilities
- the rights, responsibilities and rules for disability service providers
- how you will get support and services that other people in the community get
- how you can get disability services, when you will get services and what you can do if you are told you cannot get disability services, and
- rights of people who live in a disability residential service, for example, a community residential unit.
