Coburg and Melbourne 2030

What is Melbourne 2030?

Melbourne 2030 is the Victorian government strategy to plan for sustainable growth over the thirty years to 2030. During this time Melbourne is expected to grow by up to one million people and Melbourne 2030 is a plan to manage growth and development whilst maintaining Melbourne’s attraction as a liveable and prosperous city for residents, businesses and visitors.

The main thrust of Melbourne 2030 is to protect the liveability of established areas and to accommodate major change and increased housing density in under-developed areas and urban centres (activity centres) which have capacity to grow.

Coburg is a designated Principal Activity Centre and this will assist Council to work cooperatively with the Victorian government to plan for and implement sustainable change in central Coburg.

How does the central Coburg 2020 Structure Plan relate to Melbourne 2030?

The Coburg Structure Plan sits alongside the framework of Melbourne 2030. Central Coburg 2020 identifies areas within the Coburg Principal Activity Centre which can accommodate increased housing density and then sets out principles and strategies to ensure that development is sustainable and of high quality.

Melbourne 2030 provides a high-level overview for planning in metropolitan Melbourne. It sets out clear directions for managing future growth, land use and infrastructure investment. It also establishes frameworks for improved transport integration and delivery of affordable and diverse housing.

By working with both planning frameworks, Council will be able to maximise planning and development opportunities within central Coburg and deliver high quality community outcomes.

Boundary for Coburg Activity Centre

Last year the Victorian Government identified a range of initiatives that relate to planning for Activity Centres. These initiatives included setting boundaries for Activity Centres and will initially be introduced at five centres: Camberwell Junction, Coburg, Doncaster Hill, Central Geelong and Preston (High Street).

The Department for Planning and Community Development has undertaken a review of the appropriateness of boundaries for these five Activity Centres and is now seeking comment and feedback on its proposed boundaries for each of the centres.

Further information and details are available by visiting the Department's Activity Centres webpage.
