About The Coburg Initiative
Central Coburg has been named as a principal activity centre under the Victorian State Government's strategic planning policy Melbourne 2030: Planning for Sustainable Growth.
Structure planning for activity centres aims to give effect to the policies and objectives set out for activity centres in the State Government's policy and to provide effectively for changing community needs.
The Coburg 2020 Structure Plan will guide decisions for Coburg's urban renewal project over the next 5 – 15 years. It has been developed to ensure the social, cultural, environmental and economic consequences of proposed development are considered in a balanced way to achieve the vision for Central Coburg by the year 2020.
A structure plan provides local councils and their communities with a long-term plan to enable consistent consideration of planning proposals and to guide major changes to land use, built form and public spaces.
Scope of the project
Reinvigoration and urban renewal are the key aims of the project. The area involved includes 10 precincts within central Coburg (as outlined in the Coburg 2020 Structure Plan) at the cross-roads of Bell Street and Sydney Road. Coburg is located just 8 kms from Melbourne City.
As a guide the boundaries of the project are:
- Sydney Road shopping strip to Moreland Road in the south
- Hudson Street and the Coburg Railway Station to the west
- Sydney Road just north of Murray Road to the north, and
- the Pentridge redevelopment, Moreland Civic Centre and the Bridges Reserve to the east.
