Building advice and safety

Owner-builders An owner-builder is a person who builds or renovates a domestic building on his or her own land, who is not in the business of building.
Building and planning complaints Council investigates dangerous buildings. Contact Council if you see a dangerous building or the wrong use of buildings.
Protection of the adjoining owner If your building project is near or next to another property or property boundary, you may need to make sure the adjoining property is not damaged when you build.
Fences and your neighbours By law, people with a common boundary share the cost of building and maintaining appropriate fencing.
Safety for homes and units Essential safety in your home or unit includes smoke alarms and basketball rings.
Safety for commercial and industrial buildings A building owner is responsible for the essential safety measures of the building. Council inspects buildings to check safety systems.
