About the redevelopment
Why we are redeveloping the Baths
The Brunswick City Baths was constructed in 1914. There have been a number of changes and additions to facilities over time, such as removal of the 10 metre diving tower and construction of the gym and cafe extensions.
Redevelopment of the Baths provides the opportunity to renew some facilities and improve others, while also addressing a range of regulatory, compliance and efficiency issues.
The new Baths will be more accessible, environmentally friendly and provide more options for all ages and abilities to participate in a healthy and active lifestyle.
The redevelopment will:
- relocate and expand facilities, like the health club and creche
- renew existing facilities, such as the 50 metre outdoor pool and the indoor pool
- add new facilities, such as the indoor play pool and lift access
- address a range of compliance, regulatory and efficiency issues
- make the Baths more environmentally friendly, and
- improve accessibility.
When construction starts
The Baths will close at 6pm on Wednesday 1 June 2011. Construction is likely to take twelve to eighteen months and the Baths will reopen in the second half of 2012. The alternative Brunswick Baths Gymnasium, on the St Antonine College site adjacent to the Baths, will open on Sunday 5 June at 8am. Please read the Brunswick Baths Notification of Closure Newsletter (PDF 2Mb) for details.
Design
The design keeps heritage features including the facade and the indoor pool hall roof structure.
Drawings and images of the concept plans have been submitted for a Council planning application.
See the Brunswick Baths redevelopment plans and design. This design will be updated as planning progresses.
