Internships

Get experience with an internship

The Counihan Gallery In Brunswick offers internships to people interested in gaining experience of working in a public gallery context with a focus on contemporary art practice.

Gallery interns gain varied experience – from working on a specific exhibition project, to working in the Gallery space to working on the Moreland Art Collection.

Interns work on a voluntary basis, 1 to 2 days a week, over a 3 month period from September 2012.

Counihan Gallery is interested in hearing from applicants who are committed to pursuing a professional path in curating contemporary art and/or arts management in a gallery context.

The internship is often run in association with a University offering graduate or postgraduate degrees in Curatorial Studies, Museum Studies or Arts Management.

The Gallery is seeking a motivated and organised individual with an interest in contemporary art practice with sound research and writing skills to undertake an internship in late 2012.

Skills and knowledge you will learn

Gallery interns will improve their skills and expand their knowledge in a broad range of areas such as:

  • arts administration
  • artist liaison
  • gallery processes within a public gallery environment
  • marketing and promotion of exhibitions
  • exhibition design and installation systems
  • research and writing skills
  • art collection archiving, storage and maintenance
  • contemporary arts curating, and
  • Occupational Health and Safety issues for public galleries.

How to apply

Nicole Anderson

In late 2009, Nicole Anderson was selected as the Gallery's intern. Nicole was a University of Melbourne Masters of Curatorship student at the time. During her internship, Nicole assisted the Curator with researching artists and artworks in the Moreland Art Collection. She also gained practical experience and knowledge in art handling, storage, installation, arts administration, customer service and working with contemporary artists.

Dunja Rmandic

In late 2007, the Counihan Gallery In Brunswick hosted its first curatorial internship. Dunja Rmandic was a University of Melbourne Masters of Curatorship student who has gone on to work in public and commercial galleries. During her internship, Dunja gained experience in a range of areas including arts administration, customer service, marketing, installation, art collection management and curatorship. Dunja Rmandic has said of her experience:

Doing my curatorial internship at Counihan Gallery In Brunswick as part of my Masters in Art Curatorship course was an immensely rewarding experience on a number of levels. The theories I encountered about curatorial processes in my course were implemented on a practical level in an environment that was both professional and incredibly welcoming. In creating a theme, I was mentored by the supportive Gallery staff to develop the right curatorial model to bring that theme into a working and coherent project. As a curator of contemporary art it is elemental that one knows how to communicate with artists about their work, their ideas and to be aware of the intricate dynamic that exists between the creator and facilitator of these ideas; during my time at Counihan Gallery I met and worked with many artists who helped me understand the nature of this dynamic. The many details of a project like an exhibition can never be grasped unless they are experienced first hand, and an opportunity to be mentored in an environment as professional, supportive and, most of all, as highly enjoyable as Counihan Gallery, is indeed the highlight of my career so far."
