About Counihan Gallery
The Counihan Gallery In Brunswick is Council’s public art gallery and has a focus on presenting contemporary art exhibitions.
The Gallery aims to promote and inspire innovation and diversity in the visual arts through its annual program of exhibitions. It also endeavours to encourage discussion and debate about new ideas and issues in contemporary art and culture through the public program of floor talks, forums and workshops.
The Gallery opened in 1999 and is named in honour of the Australian artist and activist Noel Counihan.
Exhibition program
The Gallery presents an annual program of exhibitions by local, Victorian and interstate artists. These exhibitions illustrate the diversity of contemporary art practice undertaken in Australia.
Counihan Gallery staff curate several exhibitions each year, while other exhibitions are selected from an annual 'call for proposals' process.
Artists can apply to hire the Counihan Gallery space to exhibit their work , and be part of its annual exhibition program.
Inclusion in the Gallery's Exhibition Program is subject to an application and selection process.
Location
The Counihan Gallery is located at 233 Sydney Road, Brunswick, inside the Brunswick Town Hall. The building is near the corner of the Sydney Road and Dawson Street intersection. Enter through glass sliding doors on Sydney Road. The Gallery is to the left of the Brunswick Citizen Service Centre.
Gallery hours
Wednesday to Saturday 11 am – 5 pm and Sunday 1 pm – 5 pm.
Free. Closed on public holidays.
