Finding an animal

Finding a lost animal

If you find a lost animal, contact Council at any time.

If your call is after hours, please leave a message on the answering service, and a Council animal management officer will contact you as soon as possible.

Finding a native Australian animal

If you find a native Australian animal, call Wildlife Rescue on 1300 094 535 or the Wildlife Victoria website.

Injured pets

Please take the animal to Lort Smith Animal Hospital, 24 Viller Street, North Melbourne Melway reference 43 E4, or a local vet.

Keeping animals

It is against the law to keep a lost animal. You must report it to Council as soon as possible. All dogs are taken to the lost dogs home and all cats are taken to the cat protection society.

What to do if no one claims the animal

Let the Lost Dogs Home or Cat Protection Society that you are interested in keeping the animal. If no one claims the animal in eight days, the Lost Dogs Home or Cat Protection Society will contact you.
