Unlicensed Motor Car Traders
Who is an unlicensed Motor Car Trader?
Anyone who offers to buy, sell or exchange four or more cars in 12 months is deemed to be acting as a motor car trader, and may require a licence under the Motor Car Traders Act 1986.
However, some unscrupulous traders do not obtain licences and create a risk of serious consumer detriment.
Vehicles purchased from an unlicensed trader may not come with a warranty, cooling-off rights and clear title. Clear title usually certifies that the vehicle has not been stolen, written off or has money owing on it.
Hotline to report unlicensed Motor Car Traders
The Victorian Government is committed to protecting consumers from unlicensed traders who flout the law. Accordingly, earlier this year the Government created a new hotline that enables anyone to report suspected unlicensed motor car trading.
The number is 1800 351 591 and the hotline operates during business hours.
You can also report suspected unlicensed motor car trading online at Consumer Affairs.
Protect yourself!
Protect yourself. If you are purchasing a vehicle, make sure that the trader is licensed before you commit to buy.
