Overhanging branches
If you rent or own a home, you must ensure that any footpath, laneway, right of way or road that adjoins your property is free of obstructions to pedestrians or other road users.
You will need to trim back trees to a clearance height of not less than three metres and any trim any branches, shrubs and other vegetation back to your property line.
This is for the safety of people using the footpath and will prevent damage to vehicles.
Report overhanging branches
Report to Council any overhanging branches onto footpaths, roads or laneways. Council will inspect the property, contact the property owner and ask them to cut the tree branches.
Council does not have the power to address complaints regarding trees or branches that are causing you a concern from your neighbours property. This is a civil matter and is best resolved by negotiating direct with your neighbour.
Should this prove difficult you can contact the Dispute Settlement Centre of Victoria on 1800 658 528 (free call) or visit the Dispute Settlement website.
This service is free, confidential and easy to use. Interpreters are provided.
