Top 10 things to do in Moreland over summer

1. Eat at Brunswick's cafes and restaurantsGreek sald and bread

Moreland has some of the hippest and newest cafes and restaurants in the inner city. Visit Lygon Street, East Brunswick, to sample some of the best restaurants that we have to offer, from Greek and Italian to Indian and vegan delights. 2. Take a bike ride

Moreland has the 21 kilometre Merri Creek Trail where you can enjoy the scenery with a friend, or simply walk it. For sports cycling enthusiasts, The Brunswick Velodrome at Harrison Street, Brunswick is open 24 hours a day and is free. The velodrome is regularly used by Brunswick Cycling Club on a Tuesday and Sunday (their website lists their event dates) but it's usually empty at other times to bring your bike for a spin.

3. Find a bargain

Coburg, Brunswick and Glenroy are known for for their terrific op-shops. Pick up some cool retro cloting and 70's inspired furniture to furnish your house. Scour bookshelves for some novels and magazines, and old cds. The Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul are some of the charity shops that are located in Brunswick, Coburg and Fawkner. 4. Go bird watching

Postings on birdforum.net suggest going birdwatching in Jacana Retarding Basin in Glenroy. They tip the wetlands to the north and south of the ringroad as good spots for some "great birds". Some parks in Moreland and along the Merri Creek and Moonee Ponds Creek are also places to go birding. New to birdwatching? Visit www.ausbird.com.

5. Make some extra cash

Coburg Sunday Trash and Treasure market , held at the Coburg drive-in, is great for people who want to offload some of their old furniture, clothes and other bric-a-brac and make some extra cash! It is only $33 for a stall, and has a canteen on-site for snacks.

6. See some local art

Visit the Counihan Gallery In Brunswick, and view their latest exhibition. See the program now, and read up on the exhibitions that interest you. While you're at it, check out some of the local sculptures and public art in Moreland, situated in some of our local parks. It may take you some time to get through it all, so start planning now.

7. Shop locally for food and clothing

Spend time exploring a local shopping area, get cheap samples and seconds at factory outlets,  buy fresh local produce at CERES twice-weekly market and also pick up some jewellery or second-hand books while you are there, at CERES arts and crafts market.

8. Visit a Moreland libraryPicnic

Brunswick LibraryCoburg Library, Fawkner library and Glenroy library often have talented and well-known authors giving talks on their latest book release, or talks that include historic houses in Glenroy. Events such as Bollywood dancing and the Graveyard walk, which features a walk through Fawkner cemetery, as part of the Talks on Moreland series, are also on offer. These talks and events are popular and bookings should be made by phoning the local library where the talk or event is on.

9. Have a picnic

Moreland has lots of parks and playgrounds that are great for having a picnic with your family or friends. One of the biggest and most well-known of these parks is Coburg Lake Reserve, which is a popular place for weekend and summertime picnics. There are many paths to walk on, and the children have lots of play space to keep them amused.

10. Go to a festival

Moreland is home to many culturally diverse community events and festivals. The Brunswick Music Festival is a way to see new Sydney Road filled with people and stalls at Street Party 2006local talent for all musical styles and tastes. Don't forget to mark the big yearly event in your diary, the Sydney Road Street Party, where you will can sample a multcultural range of food, music and arts and crafts.
