Fawkner

Fawkner is bound by the Upfield railway line to the west, generally Queens Parade to the south, Merri Creek to the east and the Western Ring Road to the north. The Fawkner Profile covers social demographics from the 2006 Australian Bureau of Statistics Census of Population and Housing.

The enumerated population count for Fawkner in the 2006 census was 11,937.

Population and age

Fawkner has a larger percentage of people aged 70 to 84 years old (15.6%) and 5 to 11 years old (9.4%), compared to the City of Moreland (10.7% and 7.3% respectively).

48.8% of Fawkner residents stated they were born in Australia.  This a smaller proportion than compared with the Moreland average (60.3%).

The Top 10 countries of birth for Fawkner (excluding Australia) were Italy, Lebanon, Greece, Iraq, Turkey, Pakistan, Malta, Philippines, New Zealand, and India.

A larger percentage of Fawkner residents were born in Italy (15.3%) and Iraq (2.7%), compared to Moreland overall (7.4% and 0.6% respectively).

Languages

Fawkner has a smaller proportion of residents who speak English only at home (35%) compared to the City of Moreland (54.6%).

The Top 10 languages spoken at home in Fawkner (other than English) are Italian, Arabic, Greek, Turkish, Assyrian, Urdu, Maltese, Bengali, Vietnamese, and Sinhalese. 

A larger percentage of Fawkner residents speak Italian (21.9%) and Arabic (10.1%) compared to Moreland overall (11.7% and 6% respectively).

Religion

A smaller proportion of Fawkner residents professed no religious affiliation (5.8%) compared to the City of Moreland (17.1%).

The main religions represented by Fawkner residents are Catholicism (49.6%), Islam (17.1%), Orthodox (8.3%), Anglican (4.4%), Buddhism (1.5%), and Presbyterian and Reformed (1.2%). A larger percentage nominated Catholic (49.6%) and Islam (17.1%) than the average for the City of Moreland (37.2% and 7.9% respectively).

Income

6.8% of the Fawkner population earned a high income, while 56% earned a low income, compared with 15.7% and 44.4% respectively for the City of Moreland.

Education

A larger percentage of Fawkner residents do not have qualifications (59.5%) compared to 47.5% of residents of the City of Moreland. Conversely, Fawkner has a smaller proportion of residents who hold a Bachelor Degree or higher (8.4% compared to 21.4%).

A larger percentage of Fawkner residents left school at Year 8 or below (20.2%), who left school at Year 10 or equivalent (13.2%) and who did not go to school (4.2%), compared with the City of Moreland (12.8%, 10.8% and 2.4% respectively). 

Fawkner has a smaller percentage of residents who left school at Year 12 or equivalent than Moreland (32.5% compared to 48.4%).

Fawkner residents constitute a smaller percentage of persons attending University than the City of Moreland (2.2% compared to 5.9%).

Transport

Larger percentages of Fawkner residents (69.3%) used private cars (either as driver or passenger) to get to work than the City of Moreland average (56.7%).
