City of Moreland

Welcome to Moreland One Community Proudly Diverse sign on Sydney RoadThe City of Moreland lies between 4 and 14 kilometres north of central Melbourne.

It is bordered by the Moonee Ponds Creek to the west, Merri Creek to the east, Park Street to the south and the Western Ring Road to the north.

The City of Moreland covers the suburbs of Brunswick, Brunswick East, Brunswick West, Coburg, Coburg North, Fawkner, Glenroy, Gowanbrae, Hadfield, Oak Park, Pascoe Vale, and Pascoe Vale South. Small sections of the suburbs of Fitzroy North and Tullamarine are also located in the City.

The enumerated population (those counted on census night in Moreland) was 135,205. However, the estimated resident population count (an estimate that accounts for people not counted in the census) was 144,015 (as at 30 June 2007).

Country of birth

Moreland had a larger percentage of residents born overseas (32.3%) and a smaller percentage of Australian born residents (60.3%), compared to the Melbourne Statistical Division (MSD).

The top 10 countries of birth for residents in Moreland (excluding Australia) are Italy, Greece, United Kingdom, Lebanon, China, India, New Zealand and Turkey, Malta and Vietnam.

Languages

Moreland has a large percentage of residents who speak a language other than English at home (39.6% compared to 26.5% for the MSD), and a small percentage of residents who speak English only at home (54.6% compared to 68.0% for the MSD).

The Top 10 languages spoken at home in Moreland (other than English) are Italian, Greek, Arabic, Turkish, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Maltese and Cantonese, Spanish and Urdu. 

Religion

A larger proportion of Moreland residents professed a religious affiliation (72.3%) than the MSD (68.2), and a smaller percentage that stated they had no religion (17% in Moreland, compared to 20% for the MSD).

The main religions represented by Moreland residents are Catholicism (37.2%), Orthodox (9%), Islam (7.9%), Anglican (6.8%), Uniting Church (2.4%), and Buddhism (2%). Moreland has significantly larger percentages of residents who nomiated Catholicism (37.2%), Orthodox (9%), and Islam (7.9%) compared to the MSD (28.4%, 6% and 2.9% respectively).

Transport

Larger percentages of Moreland residents (19.2%) used public transport to get to work than the MSD average (11.7%). There were also a larger percentage of bicycle commuters in Moreland (3.6%) compared to the MSD (1.1%).

Moreland residents also have much lower rates of car ownership than the MSD. 14.9% of Moreland residents stated that they did not own a vehicle, compared to 9.4% of the MSD. A further 40% of Moreland households stated that they owned only one car compared 33.5% of the MSD.
