Reconciliation Week 2009: Unveiling of plaques to acknowledge the Wurundjeri
As part of implementing the Reconciliation Policy and Action Plan, Council is committed to installing plaques on Council-owned community buildings to acknowledge the Wurundjeri as the traditional owners of the land.
A number of community groups have chosen to have a ceremony to promote and honour this.
About the unveilings
Each unveiling will last about an hour and involve a Welcome to Country, Mayor’s speech, a response from the representative of the community group involved, entertainment and morning or afternoon tea.
Wednesday 27 May: Coburg
- 12 noon
- Bob Hawke Centre, Hudson Street, Coburg
- with an invitation to ACES residents.
Saturday 12 May: Coburg
- Noon
- Newlands Neighbourhood House, 20 Murray Road, Coburg
- Groups include Newlands Preschool and Friends of Edgar Creek
- Plaque unveiling is followed by a BYO lunch at the ’ junction of the creeks’
Tuesday 2 June: Glenroy and Coburg
- 10.30 am at Glenroy Senior Citizens Centre, 11 Cromwell Street, Glenroy
- 2 pm at Shirley Robinson Children's Centre, 1A Cameron Street, Coburg
Wednesday 3 June: Fawkner
- 10.30 am at Fawkner Senior Citizens Centre, 77 Jukes Road, Fawkner
- With other groups involved in the Senior Citizens Centre
Thursday 4 June: Coburg
- 10.30 am at Coburg Senior Citizens Centre, 21 Harding Street, Coburg
Later events
Special plaques are being designed and made for the Bell Street Council buildings and Brunswick
Town Hall. These will be unveiled later in the year, hopefully in NAIDOC week from the 5 – 12 July.
