Interview with Cr Connellan
Why did you run for Council?
To build on the work of the first four years, and to see some of the bigger projects and plans completed or well underway.
What do you see as the top five issues facing Council over the next four years?
- Climate change, and how we address it at a local level
- The impact of the recession on our residents, particularly on jobs
- Open space and trees - how do we care for and plan for improvements in a water constrained future?
- Implementing the Coburg Initative
- The ongoing complexity of land use planning, within a framework that is controlled but poorly led by the state government.
Name three things you want this Council to achieve in the next four years?
- To be carbon neutral by 2012, as promised in the Mayor's Speech
- To have completed at least one of the Coburg Initative projects
- To have completed the first two projects in the aquatics strategy - Brunswick Baths redevelopment and Oak Park improvements.
What is your vision for Moreland?
A much greener city, and with better public transport and public spaces. A more socially just place, with more public and affordable housing. A better educated city, with greater opportunities for good quality public education
What are your hobbies and interests?
There isn't much time for hobbies and interests when you're a councillor!
What community activities in Moreland have you been involved in?
Jewell Station planting group, Upfield Railway coordinating group, Rotary and Save the Brickworks.
What are some of your favourite things about Moreland?
It's flattish - which means getting around by bike is easy. It's always changing, which makes it interesting. Brunswick Baths, Hoffmans Brickworks, Victoria Mall, Jacana basin, CERES, the churches in Sydney Road, the op shops (although not as many as there used to be), the Upfield railway and Sydney Road shop tops.
Work experience, career, job?
Civil engineer and planner, currently a project manager with the State Government.
Family, children, dogs, cats?
Large extended family and too many cats.
What’s the best time of day and method for residents and community groups to contact you?
Weekends or after hours are best if phoning, email anytime is preferred.
Sum up Moreland in five words
Interesting, varied, everchanging, lively, great.
