About Cr Rob Thompson

Why did you run for Council?

Many of us wish things were done differently, or don't understand why things are done at all in Council. Some will complain to their neighbours, some will shrug and say nothing, others will protest, write to the paper or just lament. I decided to be part of the process, be a part of the solution, be a part of (shaping) Moreland.

What do you see as the top 5 issues facing Council over the next 4 years?

Moreland has an ageing population and an ever ageing asset base, yet a constantly increasing population. These three things will stretch council over the coming decades, not just the next 4 years. I see the top 5 issues for the next four years as:

  • introduction of the fire levy that will be collected by Council
  • the need to address our ageing assets
  • bluestone lanes
  • managing assistance for the aged, and
  • a solid and clear stance on development and what we want Moreland to look like in the next 10 or 20 years.

What local issues are you especially interested in?

Quick and efficient response to the small issues that are raised with council is my main focus, waste matters, parking issues and safety concerns. Many can be handled quickly and efficiently with our Council resources. However there are a number of issues that I would like to look at locally. Just a few of these are:

  • The Coburg Initiative and what we plan to do to keep it on track.
  • Developing a strategy to reduce speed or at least the danger of traffic using our smaller streets, particularly those around parks and schools (as rat runs).
  • The development of a level crossing at the rail lines in Munro Street near Dan Murphy's.

What is your vision for Moreland?

As Melbourne continues to expand, people find less of a reason to travel into the CBD. The opportunity to turn Moreland into a residential and commercial hub that can deliver local employment along with great bars, cafes, restaurants and retail outlets is of primary interest. Doing this without eliminating the heritage and beauty of our suburbs will be the challenge over the coming years.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of Council?

With two young boys and a gorgeous wife, my interests are largely on hold for the moment as I adapt to the requirements/commitments of work, Council and family. However, when given the opportunity I love to travel, entertain and ride horses with friends in rural Victoria.

What are some of your favourite things about Moreland?

Moreland has many great restaurants and bars, but our wonderful Craft or Boutique Beer producers in Brunswick are a highlight for me. We have easy access to pools and recreational facilities and are constantly upgrading and developing the existing ones.

Coming to or getting away from Moreland is also made easy with the freeway at our door step and public transport across the suburbs.

Work experience, career, job?

For the past 10 years I have worked in the Infrastructure business managing road maintenance contracts in country Victoria on behalf of Vicroads. I have also worked in event management and was involved in the traffic and transport for the 2006 Commonwealth Games and other major events.

Family, children, dogs, cats?

My wife Tina and I have 2 young boys Banjo and Dash.

What's the best time, day or method for residents and community groups to contact you?

The easiest way to communicate with me is via email.

Along with several of the other councillors, I work full time and can respond to messages most evenings. I am happy to take phone calls after 4.30 pm any day of the week but don't be surprised to hear the voices of 2 young boys in the background.

I encourage anyone to leave a message if I don't answer so I can return their call.
